This is the first blog entry for the Farmington Hills High Risk Response Team, which was founded in December 2012 by members of HAVEN and the Farmington Hills Police Department. Our mission is to “create internal policies and practices to screen domestic violence cases and identify high risk offenders.” In doing so, we can help prevent tragedy from occurring and provide services to those who find themselves in a domestic violence situation. Early intervention is key!
Who is on the team? We are comprised of many community organizations: HAVEN, Farmington Hills PD, City of Farmington Department of Public Safety, Call to Action Coalition, Mai Family Services, Oakland University, Jewish Family Services, Farmington Public Schools, Beaumont Hospital, state and city prosecutors and 47th District Court personnel, to name a few. We always welcome new faces to our group!
Did you know? We are the first group of its kind in Michigan! Our group is based on a model developed in Massachusetts which successfully reduced homicides in domestic violence situations that were occurring in one particular community. A research-based lethality/danger assessment was created to aid first responders and other members of the community who work with domestic violence survivors to flag the high-risk cases and take necessary precautions to protect those involved. This assessment is currently being utilized by the Farmington Hills PD.
Our group has steadily gained notoriety by other police departments, which has resulted in several other police agencies creating similar groups in Wayne and Oakland Counties.
On the National Scene: Members of our group have presented the team’s work in Cook County, IL, Philadelphia, PA and were recently invited to speak at a conference in California in September.
Kudos! To members of our HAVEN group for recently receiving a Civil Citation from the Farmington Hills PD for their quick response and diligence in a domestic violence case which led to the successful prosecution of the offender.
